Long Distance NEMT Cost
in Hampton Roads — Clear, Per-Mile Rates
Traveling beyond 20 miles for a medical appointment? On Time NEMT provides transparent per-mile long distance NEMT pricing from Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach — with an instant calculator so you know your cost before you call.
What Is Long Distance NEMT — and How Is It Priced?
Standard NEMT pricing in Hampton Roads uses flat rates for short trips — a fixed dollar amount for 1–10 miles or 11–20 miles. Long distance NEMT is priced differently: trips of 21 miles or more are billed at a per-mile rate that varies by transport type and whether the trip is a round trip or one-way.
This per-mile structure gives patients and families a predictable, proportional cost. The further you travel, the more you pay — but the rate per mile is fixed and transparent before the trip begins. What we quote is what you pay. No fuel surcharges. No vehicle fees. No add-ons after the fact.
Why Round Trip Rates Are Lower Than One-Way Rates
The most common question we get: why does a one-way trip cost more per mile than a round trip?
The answer is vehicle utilization. When you book a round trip, the driver stays with you or returns at a scheduled time and brings you home — the vehicle is occupied in both directions. When you book one-way, the driver must return to Hampton Roads empty after dropping you off, meaning the provider’s total driven miles are double your trip — but only your leg is billed to you.

Long Distance NEMT Cost in Hampton Roads
All rates are per mile based on total billed distance. Select your trip direction below.
🔄 How round trip billing works
Both legs are included in one booking. Total billed miles = your one-way distance × 2. The lower per-mile rate reflects the vehicle being occupied in both directions.
💰 Round trip saves you money
Round trip rates are exactly half the per-mile cost of one-way rates. If you need a return ride, booking round trip is always the better value.

➡️ How one-way billing works
You book transport to a destination only — no scheduled return. The higher per-mile rate reflects the driver’s empty return leg to Hampton Roads after drop-off.
📋 When one-way makes sense
One-way is appropriate for hospital discharges, facility transfers, or trips where a family member is handling the return. Always compare to round trip if you’ll eventually need a ride back.
